Did you know that most women wear 20% of their wardrobe 80% of the time? That means that 80% of your wardrobe is just taking up space and much of it is quite probably wasted money!
In times like this, when money is tight coming up to Christmas, and the cost of living hurts your shopping budget, there are a few tricks that can really help you look great, while spending very little, or even nothing!
When was the last time that you brought a great item of clothing, and got it home only to find that you had something very similar already in your wardrobe?! Many people make this common mistake because their wardrobes are too full to easily see what they have. If this sounds like you, it’s time for a clear out.
With so many social occasions at the end of the year, summer coming up and sales on in the shops, it can be very tempting to go out and buy a whole new outfit for each event that you have to go to. However, this can be a big waste of money, and end up as that 80% of your wardrobe that you hardly ever wear.
So what other option is there??
First of all, get some inspiration. Flick through a fashion magazine, stroll through the shops and check out the window displays, or go online to some great fashion websites. Once you have an idea of what kind of outfit you want to get, stop. Don’t grab your keys and credit card. Instead, try to shop from your own wardrobe first!
You’d be surprised at how often you can recreate a look from items you already have in your own wardrobe. You may need to substitute one colour for another, or change a straight skirt to an a-line, but give it a go. You may even be able to make the whole outfit from pieces that you haven’t worn in a while. Otherwise, you might find that you only need to buy some new accessories to spice it up, instead of buying a whole new outfit.
Experiment mixing old pieces of clothing together in new ways. Take a digital camera shot to remind yourself of all the ideas you’ve come up with. It’s very handy to have these pictures to turn to on days when you lack inspiration of what to wear.
Try to have a good clear out and an experiment with your clothes twice a year, coming into summer and winter. That way you may be re-inspired to put some of that neglected 80% to use. For those items that you’ve chosen to give away, why not organize a clothes swapping evening with your friends. This is a great way to shop for free and to restock your wardrobe for the coming season. And don’t forget that you can often get great bargains at second hand stores too.
There are lots of ways to look great without spending a fortune. You just need to get creative. Think more. Buy less.
